AGSV Finals - Report

AGSV Athletics 2013 – Grammarian Report

The 2013 Athletics season was held once again during Term 3, over a short, intense 6 week season. Led by Captain Daniel Bancroft, the squad boasted healthy numbers and great level of enthusiasm and spirit in both junior and senior ranks.

The squad benefitted from expert coaching thanks to past and present athletes including former Captain Hanson Wong (2012) and long time ally and 400m specialist Gregor Evans.

The 2013 AGSV Athletics Finals were held at Albert Park on Wednesday, with Camberwell's squad improving there performance from 2012, accumulating more overall points and medals in a great day of competition.

Over 75 events, CGS collected 11 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals, finishing a close 3rd to Trinity and Peninsula, with only a handful of points separating 2nd – 5th placed schools.

The CGS U17 and Open age groups were particularly strong, placing first and second respectively.

There were numerous individual and team highlights during the day, with many athletes defying windy conditions to post personal bests and further the cause of the team in style.

To start the meet, the Open 4x400m team of Steven Clark, Nick Stragalinos, Matthew Woodgate and Daniel Bancroft finished second, the third time in 4 years that the 4x400m has netted silver in the opening event.

Gold medal winning efforts then came from:
Rising star Connor McKee in the U13 400m.
Matthew Hobson and Luke Ireland in the U14 1500m team event.
Terry Yan in the U15 Long Jump
Joel Assauw in the U16 400m. Joel then teamed with Edan Runge, Shaveen Kariyawasam and Brandon Lam to win the U16 4x100m relay.
Jayden Chen in the U17 110m hurdles.
Marcus Jones in the U17 100m and the  200m and the Long Jump.
Marcus and Jayden then teamed with Maxim Wakefield and Miller Medina to win the 4x100m relay in resounding fashion, giving Marcus 4 gold medals in total on the day.
William Huang stunned the large crowd with a resounding win in the Open 100m, CGS' first victory in that event since Josh Ross in 2007.

Doncaster Trials Results - 3rd August.

Thanks to those who attended and competed in the trials at Doncaster on Saturday 3 August. It was great to see plenty of athletes trying multiple events and benefitting from the coaching on the day.

Result from the timed and measured trials are here. These will also appear under Useful Info as Current Results Table and will be posted in hardcopy on Mr. Rayner's office window - W120. Check them, compare them and speak to any staff member if you think your efforts may have gone unnoticed!

For the following Saturdays, it is critical that you post your results with CGS Aths Staff (not just a staff member from another School!) to make sure it counts in our official results.

In the meantime - keep up the training!

Pre-Season - get started!

The 2013 AGSV Aths Season commences in Term 3, but serious athletes are already commencing some pre-season training. Supplementing your Winter Sport competition with some strength and conditioning work (especially for sprinters/throwers/jumpers) can give you a head start for the relatively short AGSV season. Distance runners should also be building their base fitness so they can add  speed and strength to their existing endurance once the season begins in earnest. Don't underestimate the value of a gentle run to improve your cardio fitness and also avoid injury caused by a sudden increase in track work in August!
If you would like any specific training programmes, speak to Mr. Rayner or the One Wish Team at the gym at lunchtimes. In addition, some senior boys might like to take advantage of Monday Afternoon's with Gregor Evans, who is building our 4x400m team with some grass track and hills sessions.
Every little bit helps!

For those who are interested in planning their training in advance here is the link to the 2013 Season Schedule.
