2010 AGSV Finals - Podium Finish!

Congratulations to all those involved in the AGSV Finals on Wednesday. Despite a short, rain affected season which limited their preparation, the Team performed admirably with a record number of personal bests and some outstanding individual achievements.
Aided by some vocal support, the team improved on its 2009 performance, finishing a creditable third overall. Notably, the best age groups were Under 14 and 15, which bodes well for future years. The enthusiasm and motivation of the younger athletes, combined with the experience and leadership of the older boys, was indeed a highlight of the season.
Out of 75 events, CGS achieved 8 firsts, 12 seconds, 14 thirds and 11 fourth placings, showing that consistency was key to success. Due to illness and injury, some boys ran in older age groups, but did so without fuss and often with great success. However, special mention must go to Captains Ming Tee and Lachlan McMillan who led the team well throughout the entire season. In his four events yesterday, Lachlan won gold in Long Jump, Triple Jump and Hurdles, then anchored the 4x100m relay team for a bronze medal.
The overall standings were as follows:

Aths Victoria All Schools Knockouts

Three teams, totalling 21 CGS Athletes competed in the Athletics Victoria competition at Olympic Park on Wed 25th August.
In occasionally torrential rain, but otherwise excellent conditions, each division comprised around 20 schools and included many of the best school boy and school girl athletes from around Victoria. National and State champions set some blistering times, but it was encouraging to see many of the CGS boys up amongst the top results.
The Junior team was led by Marcel McClernon, who won his 90m hurdles convincingly. Kelvin Wong came 4th in his long jump and Matthew Appleby 7th in his 800m event. David Gray, Edan Runge and Declan Forbes were also very competitive in their various events.
The Intermediate team results were highlighted by a 7th placing in the unusual Swedish Relay (100/200/300/400). Aqshai Patel and Tobyn Temple-Smith also looked very strong over 100m, as did Adam Heard and Steven Clark over 200m. Daniel Ellis looks to be returning to previous form in his shot put and Justin Verrocchi and Daniel Bancroft both ran PBs in their 800m events. Finally Anthony Baron showed his versatility over previously untried hurdles.
Finally, the Senior Team faced some brutal competition from APS powerhouses Melbourne Grammar and St. Kevins, but performed well. Tom Stayner and Ben Thorn looked good over 400m, Alex Gregory-Allen and Matt Thorn ran PBs in their 1500m, whilst Lachlan McMillan and Daniel Tran were certainly not outclassed in their 100m. Ming Tee cleared 10.50m in his shotput and Marcus Tee was unlucky not to reach 6.00m in his LJ. Special mention to Max Morey, whose HJ was cancelled, but who benefitted from some wet night driving on his L-plates.

CGS Mini-Olympics - Box Hill 14th Aug

The annual CGS Mini-Olympics was held this weekend at the Box Hill Aths track. The event was open to all CGS athletes and four teams were selected on the day to compete for overall prizes as well as individual trophies.
With nearly 70 athletes competing, there was good depth in most of the key events, which bodes well for the upcoming finals. Some helpful tail winds favoured the sprinters, but others had to battle tough, cold, blustery weather - so well done to all who braved the conditions.
Team Captains Ming Tee, Lachlan McMillan, Marcus Tee and Alex Maklary did a great job of organising and motivating their chargers, but there could be only one victorious team on the day, as shown by the total points below. Well done to Lachlan's mob!
  1. Lachlan McMillan 316
  2. Ming Tee 296
  3. Alex Maklary's 293
  4. Marcus Tee 289
Full results can be found here, along with the performance standards that define the points calculations (here). We will continue to use this points system for the rest of the season, so keep logging your times, distances and heights to be in the running for more prizes.

Your coaches, Captains Ming Tee and Lachlan McMillan and fellow CGS Athletes are all excited to have you on board and look forward to seeing plenty of fast times, long jumps and long throws over the next few weeks.
With the backdrop of the Commonwealth Games fast approaching, now is the perfect time to be involved in Track and Field.
Training begins on July 27th, with our first track session at Doncaster. Buses will leave from Mont Albert Rd at 3:35pm, returning at 5:40pm (or you can be picked up from the track).
Following sessions vary between Doncaster and Box Hill, so be sure to check your schedule for full details (see USEFUL INFO on this site)
Our first competition and chance to see the rest of the AGSV is on August 7th.
In the meantime, Distance athletes should join in with the Cross Country Team for training, whilst Sprinters and Throwers can make use of the gym for some strength and conditioning work with One Wish.
High jumpers will have an additional session in the gym on Wednesdays at lunchtime.
Remember, it's a short season, so get started early to post your best and earn a spot in the Finals Team.

Aths Camp 2010 - Australian Institute of Sport: Get those Lactic Bears off me...

Week 1 of the July holidays saw 25 of the CGS Aths Squad attend a 5-day intensive training and sports science camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
During the camp, we received lectures and practical sessions in Strength and Conditioning, Recovery, Nutrition, Massage, Hydrotherapy and Sports Psychology. Eating with the scholarship athletes in the dining hall and meeting present and future National representatives was an awe inspiring experience for all.
In addition, there were four track sessions with leading coaches and plenty of social sport.
Key resources from the trip included lecture notes on nutrition, core strength, massage and stretching, but the most valuable lessons of training and recovery will hopefully be handed down by participants over the coming season. You will notice some of the AIS material posted on this site, including self massage and nutritional information. It's worth a look!
Some great team spirit and interaction between the most senior and junior team members bodes well for the coming season and much respect must also be given to Shawn Li's beanie.
Well done to all those involved!
