AGSV Finals 2009 - Go Fourth...

Congratulations to all those involved at Olympic Park on Wednesday 9th Sept. The supporters, the photographers, the videographers and of course, the athletes.
Competition was close all day and although we were ultimately beaten by Trinity, Ivanhoe and Peninsula, the gap to close for 2010 is not insurmountable!
Multitudes of personal bests on the day and some outstanding individual efforts. Special mentions must go to:

AGSV Finals - Team Announcement

Congratulations to all those selected as both competitors and reserves in the 2009 CGS Aths Team for the AGSV Finals!
You have all earned your place with hard work and dedication and should feel proud to wear the gold and double blue on Wed 9th Sept as we battle it out at Olympic Park.
Your coaches have deliberated for many hours before making selections and in many cases, it has been a very hard decision. Ultimately, we have tried to balance a competitive team with a good spread of athletes and we expect you to support all those selected.
A special mention must also go to the 30 or so athletes who have also competed at the Trial Meets but whose efforts will not be rewarded so publicly. Your contributions and rivalry throughout the season is vital to the success of the team. In many cases, those missing out are just as strong as the rest of the AGSV and would probably win medals too, given the chance. My message to you is to stick with Athletics - your chance will come and the taste of competition at Olympic Park will be even sweeter when it does.

AGSV Trial 4 - Doncaster

In an unfortunately typical Melbourne spring day, Camberwell athletes began their fourth round of AGSV trials in warm conditions before being washed out as storms curtailed an otherwise successful meet at Doncaster.
Despite events being limited due to the cancellation of most field events, many Camberwell athletes again achieved personal bests and the morale of the squad is high with under a week to go before the AGSV finals at Olympic Park.

• In the Under 13s, Jayden Chen and Marcel McClernon again ran well, as did Jay Wong who is showing great improvement after weeks of training. Zac Wei cleared 1.35m in the High Jump and looks to have a promising future. Chris Waller, Jesse Zhao and Andrew Holloway all ran PBs in their 800m events, with Jesse even backing up for a PB in his 1500m only 90 mins later.

• In the Under 14s, David Presser threw two consecutive PBs in the discus and Sean O’Farrell returned to form with a fast 200m. Many other sprinters also ran well, most notably Jay Yang and Steven Clark who look to be peaking at the right time. Corey Bruinstroop continues to dominate the shotput, with the 3kg shot no match for him again this week, clearing 12m on each throw. Mason Rogers, Brenton Hansford and Amer Halabi all ran solid 800s, with Mason’s return to the track adding significant depth to the squad.

• In the Under 15s, Aqshai Patel and Daniel Ellis continued their sprinting battle, with honours shared: Aqshai took the 100m, while Daniel lunged to win the 200m. Daniel Park and Brandon Tiong then joined Daniel and Aqshai in an impressive relay. Sam Cooke, Nick Dempsey and Matt Thorn all ran PBs in their 800s, with Matt Thorn returning to also record a personal best in his 1500m. Ben Watson also returned to form with the leading leap in his triple jump

• In the Under 16s, numbers were down and it was left to Tobyn Temple-Smith, Lai Kiu Lam and Cedric Ong to race the 100m, with Tobyn again proving too strong. Despite wet conditions, Lai Kiu performed well in his long jump as did newcomer Ben Kioussis in his triple jump debut. Another debutant, Justin Verrocchi, looked strong over his first 800m and Hanson Wong gave great support to his team mates with some great pace making.

• In the Under 17s, Kevin Wu battled in tough conditions in his shot put and discus. Alex Maklary ran PBs in both 800 and 1500m and his teammates Doug Brown, Cameron Trafford, Tom Stayner and Kaighin Johnson also ran well. The sprinters looked particularly strong, led by Nick Adamson, Lachlan McMillan, Daniel Tran and Duran Bradley, who made a welcome return to injury with a PB over 100m.

• In the Open Events, the standout performance came from Vice Captain Adam Heath, who ran a PB of 2:03 in his 800m. Alex Vickery ran a most pleasing 3000m and Simon Roberton chose a tough day to join the squad, but performed very well in his triple jump debut. Simon Dewan also looked strong over 200m.

AGSV Trials Round 3 - Coburg

Saturday 22nd August saw the third of the five AGSV Aths Trials held at Coburg, with a tough headwind on the front straight making fast times difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, Camberwell’s athletes continue to perform well with several outstanding performances and personal bests on the day.

• In the Under 13s, all three 1500m runners ran personal bests, with Chris Waller and Jesse Zhao well supported by Tom Oliver. Jesse and Chris also ran PBs in their 800s as did Charles MacCallum. The sprinters were again led by Jayden Chen, but there are no less than four hurdlers aiming for a place in the Finals Team, with Jayden joined by Jonathan Lake, David Kosa and Marcel McClernon in a heat dominated by CGS.
  
  
• In the Under 14s, the squad is rich in sprinting talent, with Stephen Clark showing excellent form to lead Corey Bruinstroop, Jay Yang and veteran Sean O’Farrell over 100m. Results were similar in the 200m, although Alan Ming was also impressive in his heat. Sean’s promising return to competition continued in the jumps events, well supported by William Huang and Geoffrey Wu. In the distance events, Jack Connor ran a PB in the 1500m while Amer Halabi’s 800m was also his best effort to date.
  
  
• The Under 15s, Brandon Tiong and Ben Watson sprinted well while the standout performance in the distance events came from Matt Thorn, whose barnstorming finish in the 800m gave him a PB. Sam Cooke and Daniel Bancroft also continued their consistent season. David Thorn and Alex Giovannucci continued their battle for the high jump position in the Finals team, with very little still separating the two after several competitions.
  
  
• In the Under 16s, Tobyn Temple-Smith dominated his sprint events and Cedric Ong continues to improve over the hurdles, chased by Tom Li. Hanson Wong became the first CGS runner to break 10 mins in the 3000m, continuing his good form from the House Athletics, where he led the way over 800m and 1500m.
  

• The Under 17s were down in numbers, but strong in spirits. Ming Tee’s mighty PB in the shotput was a standout. Daniel Tran led Tom Stayner and Nick Benson home in the 100m and again combined to run a solid 4x100m relay. Alex Maklary chased Hanson Wong to run 10:18 in his 3000m and Jan Uwland ran 58 seconds to add his name to the growing list of 400m hopefuls.

• In the Open events, the standout effort came from Vice Captain Adam Heath, who smashed his previous PB in the 800m, posting 2:06. Captain Phil Ha battled through his 110m hurdles and added a strong long jump to his list of achievements. Chris Duong ran a good 100m and a better 200m. Cameron Trafford made a welcome return after illness to post a please 800m time and Michael Hassed look good in his high jump.

2009 CGS Athletics Championships

Last year, you competed for individual medals. This year, the CGS Olympics was back with a new twist. 70+ athletes competed in great conditions at Box Hill, led by our Yr 12 leaders - Phil Ha, Adam Heath, Julian Lim and Hans Leung.

• Once again, the Junior athletes led the way, with some outstanding individual performances. Jayden Chen looks set to break a long standing U13 100m record as his blistering form continues. Other strong runs came from Marcel McClernon, Chris Waller, Shawn Li and Jesse Zhao.
• The Under 14 points competition was won by Corey Bruinstroop, although individual efforts from David Presser, Jay Yang and a big day out from William Huang also impressed the selectors.
• The Under 15s were led by sprinter Daniel Park and distance guru Daniel Bancroft. Brandon Tiong is recapturing some of his 2008 form and Aqshai Patel stormed home to easily win his 100m and 200m events.
• In the Under 16s, Kenneth Wu looks to be capitalizing on his solid winter training, with a strong showing in the discus. Amongst the sprinters, Tobyn Temple-Smith is growing stronger and faster with every race and Hanson Wong ran a ridiculously fast first lap but hung on to post another solid 800m time. Tony Pasalidis’ shot put was excellent, as was his determination as he finished with one shoe in his 200m event.
• In the Under 17, Lachlan McMillan and Marcus Tee again led the way with some powerful sprinting and jumping. Nick Adamson, Tom Stayner and Daniel Tran all ran under 12 seconds for their 100m, building what is looking like a formidable relay team. Jan Uwland cleared 1.70m for the first time in the High Jump and Kevin Wu’s discus flew an impressive 36.8m. Ming Tee charged home in his 200m and Doug Brown’s 2:13 was the best of the 800m runs.
• In the Open division, Phil Ha, Chris Duong and Jason Louey looked great over their 100m dash whilst Vice Captain Adam Heath ran well in both his 400m and 800m.

2009 Season Launch

Welcome to another huge season of Athletics.

After a second place in 2008, expectations are high and with the 2009 AGSV Finals just around the corner, you had better start training!
The highly competitive CGS Olympics will again be held, this time on Sat 15th August and there is also the Senior School House Aths carnival on 18th August. Old battles will resume and plenty of boasting rights can be earned on both days.
The AGSV Finals will be at Olympic Park on Wed 10th Sept. Don't miss out on your chance to represent your School and maybe even grab a medal.
